The Catholic Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania was founded on May 27, 1940. Focused on the history of the Catholic Church in Western Pennsylvania and the Untied States, the Society's objectives are threefold: to promote the teaching of that history; to preserve artifacts, records, and other items relating to that history; and to make available the results of research to those matters relative to that history.
In fulfillment of these objectives, the Society sponsors several activities. The Society publishes a biannual newsletter, Gathered Fragments. An archives is housed and maintained at the Gumberg Library, Duquesne University; it is open to the public. The Monsignor Francis A. Glenn Essay Contest is held annually by the Society and is open to high school students. The Society also offters the Monsignor Andrew A. Lecture each spring and the Monsignor Francis A. Glenn Lecture each fall.
Membership in the Society is open to all individuals, educational institutions, and lay or religious organizations interested in the history of the Catholic Church in Western Pennsylvania.
The Catholic Historial Society of Western Pennsylvania is classified as a non-profit, tax-exempt corporation organized under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code. All contributions to the Society are tax-deductible.
